DAILY COGNISANCE: The Cost of Desire – 2 Samuel 11:14-19.

DAILY COGNISANCE:

The Cost of Desire

“And it came to past in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

And he wrote in the letter, saying, set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.

And it came to past, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.

And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David: and Uriah the Hittite died also.

And Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

And charged the messenger, say, when thou hast made and telling the matter of the war unto the King,”  2 Samuel 11:14-19.

Setting: A dimly lit room with a single spotlight on a young man named David, who is staring at his phone, scrolling through social media. He looks troubled yet engrossed in the images and posts he sees.

Characters:

David (main character)

Friend (enters later)

Narrative:

David talks to the audience, sighing heavily.

David: (reflective) You know, it all started with a single glance. Just a quick scroll, and there she was. Beautiful, captivating… everything I thought I wanted. But little did I know, one moment of weakness would lead me down a path I could never return from.

(Flashbacks of him making choices: skipping work to chase a fleeting thrill, neglecting relationships. Each action leads to personal destruction.)

David: (tearfully) I thought I could handle it… the excitement, the rush. But look where it’s gotten me! (gestures to empty chairs around him) Friends lost, trust shattered, a life filled with regret.

Friend enters, looking concerned.

Friend: David! What happened?

David: (ashamed) I let my desires take control. Like it says in 2 Samuel 11:14-19, I acted without thinking, blinding myself to the consequences. I hurt those I loved… all for a moment of pleasure.

Friend: (lifting David’s chin) But you can change. You can walk away from that life. Desist from what destroys, and choose what builds you up.

David: I realize now—temporary enjoyment is often a trap. I’ll rebuild my life, and I hope others will learn from my mistakes.

(Lights dim slowly as David reflects on his future choices.)

Conclusion  Narrator (Voiceover) : “Do not be enticed by fleeting desires that can lead to destruction. Choose a path of integrity—your future self will thank you.
